Christian surfers from around the world have risen up in support of a new book telling their story.

In September, Christian Surfers International (CS) set out with a fundraising goal of $20,000 to achieve the printing of the book Groundswell.

Within a month, surfers and surf lovers from around the world put up their hands to back the Groundswell book project.

On the 9th October, with three days still to go until their fundraising deadline, Groundswell had 129 backers who collectively gave $20,024 towards the publication. By the 12th October, their target was exceeded and 173 backers gave a total of $23,564 towards the project.

One backer of the project on the fundraising site Kickstarter pledged $2000; another $1000, with four others pledging $500 each.  People gave what they could, with the most popular pledge amount being $95 (37 backers), and pledges of $5 being offered and gratefully received.

Each supporter was given something from CS to thank them for their support, with pledges under $30 receiving a postcard print from the book and a personal note of thanks from Brett Davis. Pledges over $30 received signed copies of the book and a range of other gifts, including 8’x12’ photo prints from the book, Christian Surfer’s calendars and t-shirts, a handcrafted wooden bowl by Brett Davis, and, for the highest contribution, a custom-made Eric Arakawa surfboard with a personal consultation.

The book, Groundswell, will be printed in two formats: a 250-page paperback and 260-page coffee-table photo book, chronicling the history of Christian Surfers.

Christian Surfers began in 1977 when Brett Davis, now the International Director, and a handful of teenagers in Cronulla, Sydney, Australia got together with a shared passion for surfing and Jesus.

Now with missions in over 30 nations, comprising over 1,000 volunteer leaders spreading the love of God through all levels of surfing, the Christian Surfer’s story is a great one, which has finally been told in Groundswell.
