Bible Society Australia has launched an election guide for Australian Christians in the lead up to the federal election on 7 September.

The resource, which canvasses a range of topics of interest including same sex marriage, refugees and asylum seekers, disability care and climate change, summarises the party positions of the major parties and Christian political parties, and collates a series of Christian thinking on each issue.

“We’re a non-political organisation,” says Bible Society Australia’s CEO Greg Clarke. “Having said that, we welcome all manner of debate on political, ethical and social issues, and we’re particularly pleased when the Bible is involved in those discussions, bringing all of its wisdom to the reflection on the issues that face us today.”

Clarke says the guide is an expression of Christian unity.

“Christians are held together by stronger bonds than politics. We are united in believing that Jesus Christ is the revelation of God to us, the “word made flesh” as the Bible describes him, and the salvation of the world. Any political differences that Christians have are surpassed by this common commitment to Christ which means we can call each other brothers and sisters.

“Our unity in Christ enables us to express our different viewpoints in love and fellowship, and this guide hosts a range of different perspectives from Australian Christian organisations and individuals.”

The guide itself is a work in progress, released to encourage Christian organisations and Christian leaders and thinkers on each of the issues represented, to contribute their views to the guide.

Bible Society’s Content and Publishing Manager, John Sandeman says the guide is a starting point for Christians concerned about where our nation is heading, and keen to hear what other Christians have to say.

“The guide is in no way a definitive list of the issues Christians care about in this election,” says Sandeman. “But we offer it as a first point of call to start engaging with the issues.”
