Christians honoured in Australia Day awards

Tuesday 27 January 2015

Over 600 Australians have been awarded Australia Day honours for their contributions to society, including more than 100 Christians.

The Australia Day 2015 Honours List recognises a diverse range of contributions and service across all fields, including professional endeavours, community service, Defence and Emergency Services personnel, and acts of bravery.

The annual Australia Day awards recognise the outstanding life work of many Aussies. Pastor Sonny Graham from Esperance, WA is one of those people. He was awarded an OAM for service to the Indigenous community of Western Australia.

The Churches of Christ pastor grew up on a mission station and he’s told the ABC his experience of the Norseman mission was a positive one. He returned years later to work as the mission’s superintendent.

In recent years his passion has been to restore and revive the local Ngadju language for the younger generation. Read more of his story over at the ABC WA page here.

Another Christian honoured yesterday was Valerie Rose, of Warwick, Queensland, for service to community health.

“My only aim is to support those with a vision for change and to trust in the Lord,” she told her local paper.

She’s been a foster mum to about eight children, supported refugee families, and established local grief and domestic violence support services. She is also an active member of the Combined Church Pastoral Care team at the Warwick Hospital, and supports an orphanage for disabled children in Fuzhou, China.

“When I look at all the things I’ve done fostering young people, the grief support and the pastoral care have been the most rewarding,” Valerie said.

“I just want to thank everyone who has supported me and walked with me, I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of John and my family.”

Read more of her story here.

Below is a list of those in with church and religious associations who were honoured yesterday.

(We acknowledge there could be others also associated with church activities which are not as obvious and to them we also extend our sincerest congratulations).
