A new book written by John Dickson called A Doubter’s Guide to the Ten Commandments provides a short overview of the 10 Commandments, and how they have informed much of what we take for granted in the West.
“The climax of the commandments says you can’t ultimately fulfil these commandments, so you need the mercy of God, that Jesus brought into the world.” – John Dickson
“People think of the Commandments – any commandments – as life restricting,” says John. “But actually, following the best wisdom in life is actually freeing.”
Freedom, says John, is knowing where you must not go. Using an analogy from skiing, John makes the point that you only need to know the two or three ways to not get down the mountain (avoiding trees and cliffs), but that outside of those few forbidden routes (restriction), there are many many other ways to get down the mountain (freedom).
“The Bible says you can’t actually fulfil these commandments perfectly anyway. The climax of the commandments says you can’t ultimately fulfil these commandments, so you need the mercy of God, that Jesus brought into the world. So ultimately this book points to Christ.”
