Pope Francis made headlines this week by confessing that he often falls asleep whilst praying. The papal admission was made on Catholic TV 2000, a programme published on YouTube, and was generally received as good news for Christians right across the earth.
Pope Francis refused to be ashamed of his prayer-time dozing, and instead explained that the habit was actually pleasing to God and showed that he was as comfortable during prayer as a child is when they fall asleep in their parent’s arms.
Besides, Pope Francis, reminded his viewers, the 19th century Saint Thérèse used to do it all the time.
We checked and he’s right. She actually said,
“The fact that I often fall asleep during meditation, or while making my thanksgiving, should appall me. Well, I am not appalled; I bear in mind that little children are just as pleasing to their parents asleep as awake; that doctors put patients to sleep while they perform operations, and that after all, ‘the Lord knows our frame. He remembers that we are dust.’”
Here’s to a weekend of prayer and napping, everyone. You’re welcome.
