An Anzac Day resource pack that teaches kids to be “diggers for Jesus” has been launched by Lost Sheep and Bible Society Australia.
The resources – including a storytelling kit, PowerPoint presentation and kids activity book – are created by Andrew McDonough, writer and illustrator of Lost Sheep kids books (which also feature “Cecil the Lost Sheep”, who has his own Facebook and Instagram pages).
“I hope at this time … kids and families will be thinking creatively about how we can help others.” – Andrew McDonough
The Anzac resources are based on McDonough’s book Through the Roof, that tells the biblical account of a paralytic man being lowered through the roof by friends in order to be healed by Jesus (Mark 2:1-12).
Adults can use the presentation to teach kids the lessons in the story which relate to the Anzac spirit.
“The thing I love about the Anzacs – the diggers – is that they always help out their mates,” McDonough tells Eternity.
“They don’t give up when the going gets tough and they don’t worry too much about what everyone else is thinking – they just get on with helping others.”
“I hope at this time, when we have to be isolated from each other, kids and families will be thinking creatively about how we can help others.
“I also hope that in these tough times, they’ll use that spirit of ‘not giving up’.
“While we can’t go out and march on Anzac Day, these are some ways that we can honour Anzacs this year.”
