Netflix to make Messiah series with Mark Burnett and Roma Downey
Team behind The Bible TV show to bring Jesus’ second coming to small screens
The biggest online streaming service in the world, Netflix, is developing a new show about the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Messiah is being produced by powerhouse couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who brought The Bible mini-series to television success around the world in 2013.
The Christian couple were also behind last year’s disappointing remake of Ben-Hur, which tanked at the box office and only irritated critics.
However, testimony to the skill and power of Downey and Burnett (who was also instrumental in establishing the reality TV behemoths Survivor and The Apprentice), Messiah was one of only five new shows to receive lucrative tax credits for filming in California, USA.
According to Deadline Hollywood, Messiah will chronicle “the modern world’s reaction to a man who first appears in the Middle East and seems to be performing miracles.”
Netflix has not officially greenlit Messiah, as yet. Although Burnett and Downey are working closely with Netflix at the moment, they recently launched Light TV – a 24-hour faith and family entertainment channel – that partners with Fox network in the USA.
