Coopers brewery has cancelled the release of 10,000 cases of their Premium Light beer, tagged with Bible verses in celebration of 200 years of the Bible Society in Australia, after community backlash to a Bible Society video caused a media storm, resulting in several bars and pubs boycotting the Australian beer.
The boycott included a hashtag, #boycottcoopers, which trended on Twitter on Monday.
“Coopers never intended to make light of such an important issue.” – Tim Cooper
In a press release Tim Cooper said “Our company’s guiding principles have centred around respect for others, and, as such, the recent activity surrounding the video made by the Bible Society has conflicted with our core values. Coopers never intended to make light of such an important issue, and would never and did not approve the making or release of the Bible Society video ‘debate’.”
“On behalf of the Coopers Board and senior staff, we are incredibly saddened by the impact our involvement with the Bible Society has had on our valued Coopers drinkers and our extended family,” Coopers Managing Director, Dr Tim Cooper, said.
As part of the press release, Coopers has announced that they support marriage equality, stating that to “show further support for our community,” they will join the group Australian Marriage Equality.
