John Dickson from Centre for Public Christianity is getting behind Earth Hour 2013. At 8.30pm this evening, thousands of Australians will switch off their lights for one hour as a “show of unity in protecting the planet”, in what has become the world’s largest environmental movement.

The focus of Earth Hour 2013 – an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – is encouraging Australians to pledge to make the switch to renewable energy sources like solar or green power.

The movement is not without its detractors, with many commentators suggesting the symbolism of turning off your lights for an hour does nothing to help the environment, and is evidence only of an increase in slacktivism.

But Dickson says he can’t help but feel like “Christians have lagged in this area…and we really shouldn’t have…like everyone else, Christians have a responsibility to care for God’s earth.”
